Round One (Anaheim Convention Center front doors)

  • A single line forms in front of the Anaheim Convention Center.
  • Contestants may begin to line up at 6 a.m., and the competition will begin at around 7:30 a.m.
  • Disney trivia personnel (“Quizmasters”) stationed at the Convention Center doors will call forward the next person in line and ask him a Disney trivia question chosen at random from a list.
  • Each contestant will be ruled “correct” or “incorrect” at that moment. In making that ruling, the individual Quizmaster’s decision shall be final.
  • If a contestant is ruled “correct,” then he/she will be allowed to pass through the Convention Center door and will be directed to the competition area for Round Two.
  • If a contestant is ruled “incorrect,” then he/she will not be admitted into Round Two at that time. The contestant may (if he/she chooses) re-join the end of the contestant line and try again. If the contestant line has already been closed, then the contestant’s participation in the competition shall end at that point.
  • It is expected that the line for Round One will be closed when approximately 2,000 contestants have been admitted to Round Two, although final determination of this will be made on the day of the competition and may be impacted by how quickly the competition is progressing. The line will be cut off no later than 9:45 a.m.

Round Two (Stage 23, second floor)

  • Contestants who have successfully completed Round One will be directed to the second floor of the Anaheim Convention Center, initially to a waiting area, where they will be issued a Scantron sheet and pencil and given instructions for Round Two.
  • Instructions shall include circumstances for disqualification (e.g., not having written name, having written obscene message on form, etc.).
  • A friendly D23 Staff Member will instruct all contestants to write on the Scantron form their NAME and the PHONE NUMBER at which they can be contacted between 7 a.m. and 9 p.m. each day of the contest (and will remind them that if the D23 Team does not have that information, the contestant will inevitably be disqualified).
  • When the briefing is complete, contestants will enter Stage 23 and Round Two of the event will begin.
  • A Quizmaster will read a series of 25 multiple-choice Disney trivia questions; these questions will also be displayed on screens in the room. Contestants will mark their answers (A, B, C, D or E) on their Scantron sheets.
  • When the series of questions is complete, contestants will leave the Stage 23 area, surrendering their answer sheets to D23 Staff as they exit.
  • There will be multiple sessions for Round Two throughout the morning. It is anticipated that all answer sheets will be scored and the Round Two winners named by 2 p.m. Contestants are free to leave the Convention Center area after their Round Two session is complete and return at 2 p.m. to find out how well they fared. It is also anticipated that the Round Two results will be posted online.
  • The top 350 contestants from Round Two (the “Contestant Pool”) will proceed to Round Three.

Round Three (Stage 23)

  • Round Three is expected to start at around 3 p.m.
  • Round Three contestants will enter Stage 23 and find a seat.
  • Round Three will be iterative- progressively winnowing the Contestant Pool in waves as follows:
    1. Members of the Contestant Pool will be brought up on stage in groups of 10, starting at the front of Stage 23.
    2. The 10 contestants on stage will be asked three Disney trivia questions in succession, and contestants will write their answers. Initially these questions will be multiple choice, but as Round Three progresses the questions will become more difficult and more complex answers may be required.
    3. Those contestants who score at least two correct answers (out of three) will remain in the Contestant Pool and progress to the following wave.
    4. Those contestants who score one or fewer correct answers (out of three) will be eliminated from the Contestant Pool. They will be welcome to stay in the audience and watch the rest of Round Three, or they are free to leave at that point.
  • These waves of questions will proceed until there are just 18 contestants left, and they shall be deemed the winners of Round Three, progressing to the Semi-Finals.
  • Up to 4 alternates may also be named and invited to join the audience for the Semi-Finals. If any of the Round Three winners is unable to participate in the Semi-Finals, the D23 Team may invite one of the alternates to take his place.
  • Mechanisms will be in place to deal with ties or a situation in which a wave of questions results in fewer than 18 contestants left standing.
  • The Trivia Challenge winners from the Destination D events at Disneyland (September, 2010) and Walt Disney World (May, 2011) are automatically admitted into the Semi-Finals. So there will be a total of 20 contestants entering Round Four.

Friday August 19, 2011

Round Four (Semi-Finals, Arena)

  • There will be two separate semi-final rounds, with 10 contestants each.
  • Names are drawn at random backstage to determine which contestant is in which semi-final, and in which order the contestants will be seated on the Arena stage.
  • Each semi-final will consist of three rounds of questioning:
    1. The Basil of Baker Street Round. Each contestant will individually be asked three Disney trivia questions, scoring 1 point per correct answer with no penalty for an incorrect answer. Incorrectly answered questions are NOT thrown open to others.
    2. The Scare Floor Round. Each contestant chooses a numbered door from 1 to 12 and is asked the question pre-assigned to that number. Order of play is from lowest to highest score so far, then left to right. Two points awarded per correct answer. If the contestant is incorrect, the question will be thrown open for the other contestants to buzz in and attempt to answer.
    3. The Lightning McQueen Round. This will be a buzzer round, with 3 minutes of rapid fire questions. 1 point per correct answer. If a contestant buzzes in and is incorrect, or unable to answer, he/she loses 1 point, and the question is thrown open to the remaining contestants. There is a three second time limit to answer once a contestant has buzzed in.
  • At this point the three highest-scoring contestants of each semi-final round are deemed winners of the Semi-Finals.
  • If there is a tie, additional buzzer questions will be posed to those in the tie zone, sudden death style (the Off with their Heads Round).
  • The three winners from each semi-final round, a total of six contestants progress to the Final.

Round Five (The Final, Arena)

  • Names are drawn at random backstage to determine in which order the finalists will be seated on the Arena stage.
  • The Final will consist of two rounds of questioning:
    1. The Hasbro’s Trivial Pursuit Disney Edition Round – Each contestant will individually be asked six Disney trivia questions, one each from the following Trivial Pursuit Disney Edition categories: Heroes & Heroines, Once Upon a Time, Monsters & Villains, Supporting Stars, Places and Props, and Wonderful World of Disney. Score 2 points per correct answer with no penalty for an incorrect answer. Incorrectly answered questions are thrown open for the other finalists to buzz in.
    2. The Lightning McQueen Round a final 5-minute-long buzzer round with 1 point per correct answer. If a contestant buzzes in and is incorrect, or unable to answer, he/she loses 1 point, and the question is thrown open to the remaining contestants. There is a three second time limit to answer once a contestant has buzzed in.
  • At this point the three highest-scoring contestants are deemed to be the winner and the first and second runners up.
  • If there is a tie, additional buzzer questions will be posed to those in the tie zone, sudden death style (the Off with their Heads Round).
