D23 First Look: D23′s Destination D: 75 Years of Disney Animated Features Merchandise

07.26.12 – Here’s just a sampling of the D23-exclusive merchandise that will be available at D23′s Destination D: 75 Years of Disney Animated Features on August 11 and 12, 2012.

D23′s Destination D: 75 Years of Disney Animated Features includes exclusive previews of upcoming films from Walt Disney Animation Studios, salutes to the great Disney animators and artists of the past, hands-on activities, an extraordinary reunion of Disney animated voice talent, a glimpse at how the Disney animated features have influenced the Disney parks, rare and never-before-seen artwork and film footage, plus a special salute to Snow White (the film that started it all), and numerous surprises. Saturday ends on a “Jolly Holiday” note with a concert by Dick Van Dyke and The Vantastix performing timeless Disney songs and pop standards. We cap Sunday with a rare concert appearance by eight-time Oscar®-winning composer/songwriter Alan Menken, who will perform some of his most memorable songs from many modern-day Disney film classics, and more.

1. Fans who grew up watching Walt Disney Pictures films from 1985 until 2006 recall the excitement of seeing the image of a fairy-tale castle come to life on screen before every new release. D23 has reproduced the vintage logo on this T-shirt to celebrate the classic films made during this important period in Disney’s history.

2. When Walt Disney himself first lent his squeaky voice to Mickey Mouse in 1928, it established a tradition of finding the very best voice actors in the industry to bring Disney’s beloved characters to life. This logo of Mickey Mouse at a microphone was first introduced in the late 1980s as a way to identify the Disney Character Voices group at The Walt Disney Company.

From Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs to Wreck-It Ralph, the Walt Disney Animation Studios has entertained and delighted moviegoers for 75 magical years, creating groundbreaking films in which story is always paramount and heart is never in short supply. D23 celebrates this milestone anniversary with this T-shirt, featuring the original poster art used to promote Disney’s landmark films.

4. On August 11-12, 201, Disney fans gathered at the Disneyland® Resort in Anaheim, California to celebrate the once-in-a-lifetime diamond anniversary of one of the most universally beloved and singularly unique film genres in the world—at Destination D: 75 Years of Disney Animated Features. This logo T-shirt commemorates the historic event, presented by D23: The Official Disney Fan Club.

5. Fan cards were promotional giveaways awarded to those who contacted the Walt Disney Studios to share their admiration for Disney’s landmark films. The artwork of Dopey featured here is faithfully reproduced from an original 1937 Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs fan card preserved in the Walt Disney Archives.

1. In 1933, Disney began licensing its characters to Whitman Publishing Company to create merchandise, including Little Big Books, which later became Better Little Books. This recreated Better Little Book of Pinocchio from the Walt Disney Archives Collection has a stylized cloisonné pin of the title character inside.

2. In the Days before comic books, children exchanged Better Little Books—which were a few inches tall, sold for 10 cents each, and included hundreds of pages text and black-and-white illustrations—with their friends. This recreated Better Little Book of Dumbo from the Walt Disney Archives Collection includes a stylized cloisonné pin of the title character.

3. While most of the Disney-themed subjects were original stories featuring Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck, and Pluto, several of the Better Little Books told the stories of classic Disney animated features, including this recreated Better Little Book of Bambi from the Walt Disney Archives Collection, which includes a stylized cloisonné pin of the characters Bambi, Flower, and Thumper.

4. This recreated Better Little Book of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs from the Walt Disney Archives Collection includes a stylized cloisonné pin of the Evil Queen.

This logo keychain features Stitch and commemorates the historic Destination D: 75 Years of Disney Animated Features, presented by D23: The Official Disney Fan Club.
