Each week, Disney fans and D23 Members send us dozens of questions for Chief Archivist Emeritus Dave Smith. To get your answers, check back every couple weeks—we’ll be publishing more of our beloved Disney Legend’s answers to your questions about Disney history!

Ask Dave Your Disney History Question ►

Q: Is the rumor that Snow White’s prince’s name is Ferdinand true? If not, do you know how the rumor started?
Alex, Austin, Texas
A: The rumor is untrue. It may have started way back in 1939 when Shirley Temple presented a special Academy Award to Walt Disney in honor of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. In her speech she called Walt, “…the daddy of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Mickey Mouse, Ferdinand, and all the others…” But that Ferdinand which she was referring to was not the Prince but Ferdinand the Bull, star of a 1938 cartoon of the same name, which also received an Academy Award.

Q: Now that the Broadway version of Beauty and the Beast has closed, would the Disney Company consider releasing a filmed version with the original cast (Susan Egan and Terrence Mann) to DVD? I saw clips of it on TV when Disney was originally promoting the Broadway show, so I hoped they had filmed the entire show for future opportunities. We attended the traveling Broadway in Casper showing of Beauty and the Beast and between the poor seats (the best that we could get) and my poor eyesight, I would like to both see it better and purchase a copy!
Laura, Casper, Wyoming
A: There are usually legal barriers to releasing Broadway shows on DVD. It would depend on how the original contracts were drawn up. I know of no plans for a release.

Q: I have an old souvenir book that is in perfect condition and it has hundreds of pictures of Walt Disney World (including Epcot Center) that takes place somewhere in the ’80s, and way before the Disney-MGM Studios opened. It has a green front cover with the resort’s original logo. I was wondering I should sell it to the Archives? If so, can you give me any information about this book, if it’s rare or not?
Gabriel, Miami, Florida
A: Great numbers of the souvenir books were sold, so it would not have much collectible value. I see several copies offered on eBay for under $10. The Archives already has several copies, but thanks for thinking of us.

Q: If you could, do you think you could put together a list of everyone who has ever voiced Mickey Mouse? Possibly a list of how long they voiced him to go with it?
Krista, Hillsboro, Orgeon
A: There have, up to now, been four people who were the official voices of Mickey Mouse. Walt Disney was the first (1928-1946), followed by Jim Macdonald (1946-1977), Wayne Allwine (1977-2009), and Bret Iwan (2009- ). Additionally, composer Carl Stalling did Mickey’s voice in a few early cartoons when Walt was busy.

Q: I’m trying to find out about some pen, ink, and gouache colored drawings/paintings of Mickey and Minnie Mouse, which were done in 1936 by Walt Disney. They were signed by him and are stamped with a monogram and “WALT DISNEY.CO 1936.” I recently purchased three of these and was wondering how rare they were? Any information would be fantastic.
John, Edinburgh, Rhode Island
A: If you send copies of the drawings to the Walt Disney Archives (Disney.archives@disney.com), they may be able to identify them for you.

Q: Will Disney ever release the full episodes of Walt Disney’s Christmas Shows? I’ve seen bits of them as DVD extras, but to my knowledge no DVD contains the full episodes.
Carrie, Santa Barbara, California
A: One Hour in Wonderland, the first Disney Christmas show from 1950, was released as bonus material on the Masterpiece Edition DVD of Alice in Wonderland in 2004. The 1951 show (Walt Disney Christmas Show) has not been released, and I know of no plans to do so.

Q: What is the name of Maleficent’s bird in Sleeping Beauty?
Melanie, Daly City, California
A: The raven is called Diablo.

Q: In a recent question of mine, you mentioned that Ed Plumb wrote English lyrics to “Jesusita en Chihuahua” for The Three Caballeros. I have been unable to make out what is actually being sung during that sequence. Can you share the lyrics or else point me to where I can find a printed copy of them?
Jeremiah, Fairfax, Virginia
A: The Archives does not have the lyrics as used in the film, but the song was published on sheet music by Southern Music Co. It includes verses in Spanish and English. The sheet music credits “English lyrics by Ervin Drake; based on adaptation by Edward H. Plumb.” It can often be found from sources that sell used sheet music.

Q: I am currently a student on a BA Hons Film course. One of the modules I am currently studying is called Archive. For this module I am comparing the three Disney films, Enchanted, Cinderella and Sleeping Beauty. I was wondering if you have the storyboards for these three films and if they are digitalized so that you could send them to me. If this is not possible, do you know where I could get these documents?
Kellie, London, England
A: Sorry, the material you request is unavailable, other than what has been published in books.

Q: In watching the 1950 short Crazy Over Daisy, one can’t help that notice that the tune used in the feature (credited to Oliver Wallace) is the same music that would eventually become “Meet Me Down On Main Street.” Did Oliver Wallace write the lyrics for “Meet Me Down On Main Street” as well? Was it written specifically for the Mellomen to record, or was it written for a special on Disneyland?
Craig, Avondale, Arizona
A: Oliver Wallace wrote both the words and music for “Daisy Mae” to be used in the Crazy Over Daisy cartoon in 1949. He then adapted his song in 1956 as “Meet Me Down on Main Street,” with lyrics by Tom Adair. The latter may have first been used, without lyrics, in the Main Street, U.S.A. segment of the 1956 People and Places film Disneyland, U.S.A. and on the “Walt Disney Takes You to Disneyland” record album (WDL 4004, released May 1, 1956). The Mellomen’s recording came out in 1957 as WDL 3012.

Q: When was Epcot park inaugurated?
Natalia, Orlando, Florida
A: Epcot, then called EPCOT Center, opened to the public on October 1, 1982. EPCOT Center: A Grand Opening Celebration aired as a television special on October 23. The park is currently celebrating its 30th anniversary.

Q: Hi Dave, well after going to the D23 event a couple of weeks ago, I am confused. They mentioned that Marc Davis drew the first Tinker Bell. And after going to a lot of events and meeting with Margaret Kerry she said she is the first model for Tinker Bell. So was she the first or did Marc draw the first since D23 never mentioned Margaret Kerry.
Joann, Kildeer, Illinois
A: Marc Davis was the artist who developed and refined the character of Tinker Bell; Margaret Kerry was the actress who modeled for him. Marc was not the first to draw the character—other artists, including Bianca Majolie, were doing concept work on her by the early 1940s.

Q: Why, oh why, can’t I find a listing for an animated feature called (I think) The History of Cats? I seem to remember seeing it first in the 1970s, though it may have been produced earlier. I have tried and tried to find/acquire a copy, and it appears to have vanished into thin air! Do you know the item?
Maureen, Tampa, Florida
A: You may be thinking of an hour-long 1956 Disney television show entitled The Great Cat Family; there was also a comic book of the same title. It relates in animation the history of cats from the days of the Egyptians to the present day, and explains how cats have been used in Disney films. An excerpt from the show appears on the 2008 Special Edition DVD of The Aristocats.

Q: My family and I used to love the movie So Dear to my Heart. We would really love to have it on DVD. Was it released on DVD? If so, where can we find it? If not, are there plans to release it?
Deena, Boulder, Colorado
A: It was released on DVD as a Disney Movie Club Exclusive; there were also earlier VHS and laserdisc releases.

Q: I’m aware that Marc Davis had a hand in helping to develop certain attractions (or, rather, the overseas counterparts of existing attractions) for Tokyo Disneyland—there exists a bit of concept art of extra scenes for Tokyo’s Haunted Mansion, such as a crypt containing the tombs of famous horror figures such as Dracula and Jack the Ripper. Does his involvement in Tokyo Disneyland (or anything in Disney parks beyond the 70s) expand beyond the Mansion, and was any of his conceptual work during this period realized?
Andrew, Snellville, Georgia
A: We know that Marc Davis consulted on World of Motion in Epcot and for attractions such as Haunted Mansion, Pirates of the Caribbean (including the skeletons in the grottos), Jungle Cruise (including animals in the African veldt), It’s a Small World, and Western River Railroad (dinosaurs in Primeval Diorama) in Tokyo Disneyland after his retirement in 1978. His distinctive artwork from throughout his Imagineering career has been maintained at Walt Disney Imagineering, and it is still consulted by Imagineers. Marc died in 2000.

Q: Will the movie Zenon: Girl of the 21st Century, Zenon the Zequal or Zenon Z3 ever be released on DVD or Bluray?
Hannah, Mount Juliet, Tennessee
A: I know of no plans for a DVD release. They were released on VHS in 2000 and 2002.

Q: Dear, Dave. I noticed that Charles Muntz, the villain in Disney-Pixar’s Up, shares a name remarkably similar to that of Walt Disney’s Universal distributor, Charles Mintz. Is there any direct relationship is this sheer coincidence? Also, is it true that the character was based off of Errol Flynn?
Jared, Terre Haute, Indiana
A: According to designer Albert Lozano, “If you were to blend Errol Flynn, Clark Gable, Howard Hughes, and Walt Disney into one heroic 1930s man” you would come up with Charles Muntz. I have never heard that the name was based on Charles Mintz.

Q: I remember seeing a picture of all of the Disney characters together memorializing the death of Walt Disney. What is the name of this picture?
Maria, Sterling, Virginia
A: At the time of Walt’s death, dozens of editorial cartoonists throughout the world noted the event with similarly themed newspaper cartoons. Some had the world crying; others had the Disney characters crying. The one you ask about is obviously one of these cartoons.

Q: The Ducktales movie that was released in theaters never got a DVD release date. Are there any plans on releasing in the U.S.?
Allan, Agawam, Massachusetts
A: Ducktales: the Movie: Treasure of the Lost Lamp was released on DVD as a Disney Movie Club Exclusive in 2006; copies are currently available on eBay. It had earlier been released on VHS and laserdisc in 1991.

Q: I am working with a patient who went to Disneyland in or around 1955 with her classmates from Lewis Carroll elementary in Vallejo, California. This was a school for disabled children. Bianca Culbertson has cerebral palsy. She said the story was in the Vallejo newspaper with a picture of her with her class. This was a hugely memorable event in her life. She is trying to find a copy of that picture. I can’t find the school, have left messages for the school district and did a search with the papers, with no success. Can you give me any ideas?
Jean, Auburn, California
A: It would seem like you have checked all the obvious sources. The Disney Archives does have a collection of newspaper clippings about Disneyland, but would need a more accurate date and school name in order to know where to look.

Q: I have a 1930s character bracelet with all the Disney characters on it and I would like to know if you could tell me a little bit more about it. It is my mother’s and she is a twin and they both received them from their father. They are now 80 years old and would like to know a bit more.
Peggy, Beaumont, California
A: There have been many Disney-licensed charm bracelets through the years, so it is fairly difficult to identify any particular one. You can often get an approximate date by discerning which is the most recent character on the bracelet.

Q: I was wondering why there is a Disney/Pixar and a Disney. What’s the difference? And what started Pixar? Did Walt Disney start it, or is it recent?
Nicolas, Silver Spring, Maryland
A: Pixar Animation Studios, created to produce computer-generated animated films, was founded in the San Francisco Bay Area in 1986 and jointly produced with Disney several animated features that were labeled Disney-Pixar. Pixar was purchased by Disney in 2006. The current Pixar studio is located in Emeryville, California.

Q: When did Date Night at Disneyland return in the 1960s with Benny Goodman?
Matthew, North Hollywood, California
A: Goodman played at Disneyland on Memorial Day Weekend (May 27-29) in 1961, then returned the next week (June 3) for the start of Date Night—he performed also on June 10 and 30, and July 1.

Q: There was a cartoon, probably an early Silly Symphony, which I think might have been titled Candyland. There were gumdrop trees and gingerbread houses and the characters were dressed much like the bakers that dance around Goofy’s float in the Christmas parade. I might be misremembering some of this because I haven’t seen the cartoon since I was a little girl, but I would love to know where I can get a copy of this, one of my favorite Silly Symphony cartoons. I would dearly love to see it again, at least one more time.
Mary, Torrance, California
A: You are perhaps thinking of The Cookie Carnival (Silly Symphony, 1935). It was released on the Walt Disney Treasures DVD, vol. 3: Silly Symphonies.

Q: What is your favorite piece of Mickey memorabilia from the Archives and what is your favorite Mickey cartoon?
Alex, Muskegon, Michigan
A: My favorites are the Mickey Mouse items that aren’t normally saved as collectibles. Such items are quite scarce, but often not expensive when they do turn up: things from the 1930s like a Mickey Mouse toothbrush, underwear, sweatshirt, and matching scarf and purse. My favorite Mickey Mouse cartoon is Brave Little Tailor.

Q: Is it possible to get visit and/or get a tour of the Disney Archives?
Katherine, Pomona, California
A: Tours of the Walt Disney Archives, and the Disney Studio, are regularly scheduled during the year for D23 members.

Q: If any, what inventions is the Disney Company responsible for?
Avi, Irvine, California
A: Disney holds dozens of patents for inventions its staff members have come up with—such as the multiplane camera and Disney park ride vehicles.

Q: I’ve always wanted to become an actor on Disney how could I do that?
Alicia, Euclid, Ohio
A: To get an acting job, you would need some acting experience and an agent who would schedule auditions for you.

Q: Someone told me that the restaurant Rancho del Zocalo Restaurante in Frontierland was on the original sign over Frontierland. However I’ve tried to research it and come up empty handed. Can you explain the history, if any?
Jon, Laguna Hills, California
A: Disneyland has had a restaurant featuring Mexican food almost from the beginning. The Casa de Fritos (sponsored by Fritos) opened in August 1955 in a site near the current River Belle Terrace, but in 1957 it moved to its present site. It was renamed Casa Mexicana in 1982 and closed in 1999 to make way for the completely redesigned Rancho del Zocalo.

Q: I’m looking for a film Disney made in the 1950s that would be about or have in it an ice queen, of some sort.
Quan, New York, New York
A: You are probably thinking of The Snow Queen (1957); it is not a Disney film.

Q: Do you have a copy of the Disney movie Sancho, The Homing Steer?
Suzy, San Angelo, Texas
A: Sancho, the Homing Steer has never been released on DVD or video cassette.

Q: Is there a Pepsi commercial shot at Disneyland in 1965?
Matthew, North Hollywood, California
A: Yes, you can see it on YouTube.

Q: Was the Main Street Ice Cream Shop at Walt Disney World based on a real ice cream shop?
Carter, Kenosha, Wisconsin
A: No, it is not. Like the other buildings on Main Street, U.S.A., it is fantasy design of a shop one might encounter in an American town at the turn of the 20th century.

Q: In the 1930s my grandparents owned a movie theater and when they pass on I was left a copy of a 1929, 16MM, B/W copy of a Mickey Mouse film call Uncle Tom’s Cabin. The film is in the original can and still on the original reel but missing some of the leader. The film is still in one piece and needs some cleaning and correct care and that why I’m sending you this message. I can’t find anyone who can help me with the proper care or what to do with this film.
Michael, Fredericksburg, Virginia
A: “Uncle Tom’s Cabin” is actually a shortened version (for home use) of the theatrical cartoon Mickey’s Mellerdrammer. Hollywood Film Enterprises released such home versions of the Disney cartoons on 8mm and 16mm, usually with new titles. All the cartoons have now been released on DVD, in their complete form, so these early films have little or no value.

Q: I’m looking for historic prices for Walt Disney stock, symbol DIS.
Paul, Schnecksville, Pennsylvania
A: It is difficult to compare the price of Disney stock through the years because it has had stock splits in 1956, 1967, 1971, 1972, 1986, and 1992. When it was first listed on the New York Stock Exchange on November 12, 1957, the opening price was 14 7/8. In 1965, the price ranged from 44 to 60 3/4.

Q: I am a sophomore in high school, and Walt Disney is a major part of my life! He has always been my idol and I have a chance to express my self in a school project. And I was wondering if you know where I can find historical documents that have been very important during the beginning of the Walt Disney Company?
Jerred, Tucson, Arizona
A: The documents are unavailable, but you should check out some of the biographies of Walt Disney. Some have quotes from the letters and documents.

Executive produced by Scott St. John (Deal or No Deal) and produced by Summerdale Productions in association with ABC Media Group, the drawing board and game play for the new Disney’s Win, Lose or Draw will be powered by leading-edge technology, motion control, interactive multi-touch screen displays and graphic technology with an interjection of comedic physical challenges.

Engaging entertainer Justin Willman (host of Cupcake Wars) is set to host. Each show will feature two teams each composed of two kid contestants and a Disney star, competing in a battle of drawing skills, creativity and wits to win prizes.

The Walt Disney Archives will open up its collection to Expo guests once again at D23 Expo 2013. And joining this year’s impressive lineup of Archives treasures are props and costumes from one of the most beloved Disney films of all time, Mary Poppins.

Now finishing its second hit season, Once Upon A Time has become a huge hit among Disney fans for its ability to remain true to many of Disney’s classic stories while expanding their worlds with a modern twist. Way to go, ABC. The Archives is honored to be presenting a selection of elegantly designed costumes from the show.

We can’t wait to share all these Archives treasures and more at this year’s Expo. See you real soon!

Disney Interactive today announced that Story, a digital storytelling platform that turns photography and video into compelling personal narratives, is available for free on the App Store for iPhone and iPod touch. A revolutionary story creation and storytelling application, Story uses intuitive technology to pull from libraries of photos and videos on users’ phones and automatically organizes them into rich digital experiences which can be personalized, saved and shared.

“When we become moms, our phones instantly become the go-to device to capture the spontaneous moments of family life,” Brooke Chaffin, senior vice president, Disney Interactive Family, says. “Before we know it, we have thousands of photos and videos on our phones. Until now, there hasn’t been an easy or well-designed way to liberate this media, see the narratives that we create and tell the stories we want to share.”

Story makes creating and sharing rich media narratives as easy as sharing a single photo. The app provides an easy-to-use and artful experience that automatically assembles photos and videos into shareable narratives based on time and location. Story offers creative freedom by allowing users to build stories from scratch, then edit and personalize stories in countless ways. For those looking for a quicker solution, Story does the heavy lifting, offering effortless assembly and sharing, empowering users to quickly and easily tell the stories already captured on their phones.

Story features:

Effortless Storytelling: The Story app automatically finds the moments on an iPhone camera roll, based on when and where your photos and videos were captured.

Creative Freedom: Users can simply select a moment to share immediately, or personalize it with their own captions, pages of text, themes and layouts.

Quick, Selective Sharing: With just a couple of taps, stories can be shared via e-mail or Facebook. They are visible in any browser to invited friends and family on Story.us. Stories can also be embedded on your website or blog.

Preservation: All stories created are saved in the app and backed up by iCloud for future viewing and editing.
